Desi Street Food

Welcome to Desi Street Food, an authentic Indian eatery nestled in the heart of Leicester at 22-24 Horsefair St, LE1 5BN. As a food reviewer for Cafe Encore, I am thrilled to introduce you to this vibrant establishment that celebrates the rich tapestry of Indian street food.

Desi Street Food brings the hustle and bustle of India’s cherished street food culture right to your plate. The eatery is famous for its soft bun street snacks like the Hara Bara Kebab Pav and the Veg Samosa Pav, both generously topped with a tangy tomato-based sauce, fresh red onions, coriander, and crunchy sev noodles. For those who seek a cheesier adventure, the Chilli Cheese Toastie and the Original Mumbai Toastie are sure to delight. These dishes embody the essence of Indian comfort food, combining bold flavors with a homely touch.

What truly stands out at Desi Street Food is their all-day breakfast offerings. The Pav Bhaji—a thick, rich vegetable curry served with toasted buns—is a staple that transports you straight to the streets of Mumbai. Meanwhile, the Desi Breakfast features the famous Amritsar-style sholay curry alongside deep-fried puris, offering a delightful start to your day.

Customer reviews consistently praise the vibrant atmosphere and welcoming staff, enhancing the experience with their attentive service. Sonia Akhtar captures this sentiment perfectly when she says, “The samosa chaat always keeps me coming back!” This kind of heartfelt feedback illustrates the restaurant's ability to forge connections through food.

  • Authenticity: Diners rave about the genuine flavors that evoke memories of home. CatFilmstars noted it reminded them of back home, a testament to the authenticity of the dishes.
  • Quality Ingredients: As Maria Manfredi shared, the food is fresh, flavorful, and filling. With generous portion sizes, it offers remarkable value for money.
  • Welcoming Vibes: The decor and ambiance contribute to a cozy yet vibrant dining experience, making it a perfect spot for family gatherings or a casual bite with friends.

Desi Street Food is not just a restaurant; it’s a culinary journey that beckons you to explore the mouthwatering world of Indian street cuisine. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Indian food or a newcomer to these flavors, there's something for everyone. So, if you're looking for a taste that transcends borders and brings you the warmth of homestyle cooking, I highly recommend visiting Desi Street Food. Your taste buds will thank you!

I've eaten here a few times now and I really love it! The food is so flavourful, fresh and filling. I'm not a vegetarian, but I keep coming back because the flavour is so good especially for the price. The food definitely brings heat. I consider myself able to handle spicy/heat a bit above average (for a white person) and I feel anything above mild here would be to much for me so keep that in mind! Its also got plenty of seating and the food comes out relatively quickly.

I went here for the first time with my sisters the other day after driving past a couple of times. The food had exceeded my expectations We had mango lassi, 2 with plant based yogurt and 1 without and it was so delicious and authentic. My sister ordered a Bombay sandwich and personally I’m not a fan of sandwiches. However, she made me try it and let me tell you, this will be the only sandwich I’ll eat. The flavours in the food were astounding And the only problem was the extremely rude customer before us who complained about plastic being in his food (I’m sure he put it there himself) as himself and two other men were threatening the owner serving them. The owner didn’t argue back and was listening to them. I’m certain the customers wanted the food for free as the things they were saying to him were shocking. The rest of his family were sitting there and paying no attention. It all seemed a little to planned out to us. I decided to keep this in the review as I saw that he left a review himself that wasn’t true at all. Happy to support I shall be bringing my family here!

Recently moved from London to Leicester and I’ve been slowly exploring all the food places. Let me tell you, Desi Street Food didn’t disappoint! Food was lovely and fresh. It also reminded me of back home with it’s authentic taste and the portion sizes were great too. I will definitely be going back!
